Meet our E-Board
Our President is Shannon Kelley! She is a senior at Grand Valley State University. Her major is Comp Sci & Arts for Teaching, Special Education. She has been accepted into the College of Education and is pursuing her teacher assisting semester at White Pines Intermediate School. She is excited to begin her journey in the College of Education, and is looking forward to graduating with endorsements in emotional and cognitive impairments. The past three years she was a part of the Laker Dance Team, and enjoyed the time she had to support her school and dance nationally. She is also involved with Catholics at GVSU. She is excited to see where this year takes her, and feels blessed to be a part of the CECS here at Grand Valley!
Our Vice President is Lauren Hogikyan! She is a junior here at Grand Valley studying special education. Lauren has enjoyed working at a special education summer school in the past, volunteering at Helen Devos Children’s Hospital last year, and being a teacher in a two-year old classroom currently. These experiences confirmed her passion for teaching, and she is greatly anticipating all of the valuable opportunities to come. She loves running, being with friends and family, and spending time up north. Lauren is looking forward to another great year on CECS and hopes you are too!
Our Secretary is Amber Gerrits! Amber is a junior at Grand Valley majoring in Group Social Studies and Education with minors in Elementary Certification and French. She plans on becoming an elementary teacher, and hopes to one day work in Student Affairs, K-12 Administration, or for a nonprofit organization. On campus, Amber is a member of the Frederik Meijer Honors College, Leadership University, PALs Student Mentors program, Transitions New Student Orientation, Omicron Delta Kappa, and a site leader for Alternative Breaks. Currently, Amber is the Leadership Staff Assistant and the Finance Assistant in the Office of Student Life. In her free time, Amber enjoys listening to music, playing card games with friends, speaking French, exploring antique shops, and doing community service.
Abby Lyons is a senior at GVSU. She is majoring in Special Education, with a minor in Spanish. She is currently in the College of Ed, and is teacher assisting in a high school classroom! She is also a member of Spotlight Productions, and studied abroad in the Dominican Republic two summers ago. She has worked as a kindergarten daycare teacher, day camp counselor, has tutored in different schools, and volunteered at Camp Sunshine. All of these experiences has made her so excited to begin her teaching career! In her free time, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, reading, and watching The Office!
Our Membership Chair is Selena Brown! Selena is a sophomore at Grand Valley studying Special Education with a minor in Psychology. Selena is a student in the Fredrick Meijer Honors College, a mentor in the Campus Links Program, and a member of the College of Liberal Arts and Studies Student Advisory Committee. This past summer, she worked as a nanny and absolutely loved it! Selena is very passionate about cinnamon rolls and ice cream. In her free time, Selena loves to read, spend time with friends and family, craft, and binge watch Netflix!
Our ECI Coordinator is Jessica Golema! She is a junior here at Grand Valley and she is studying to become a special education teacher. When she is home on the east side of Michigan she works as a substitute parapro and at a fine arts camp. Jessica spends a lot of her free time dancing, either through GV Swing Club or Dance Troupe. Jessica also loves to travel and learn about different cultures, so she hopes to teach abroad after graduating.
Our Public Relations chair is Brooke Bowden! She is a junior at Grand Valley State University, majoring in Special Education and Elementary Education. She hopes to continue on to grad school and become a Speech Language Pathologist. Brooke currently works as a substitute teacher in a child development center working with children ages 6 weeks old to 6 years old. Last year she volunteered in a special needs preschool and absolutely loved it! On campus Brooke is a member of the Frederik Meijer Honors College and also participates in Grand Valley Dance Troupe.
Our fundraiser chair is Arden Clark! She is in her third year at Grand Valley State University and is studying Elementary Education and Group Social Studies. Currently, she works at Bursley Elementary as an assistant with the before and after school care and as an education programming intern through Hemlock Crossing Nature Education Center. Besides being part of the CEC, she also is a member of Grand Valley's Green Team. She loves spending time outdoors, gardening, binge watching Netflix series, swimming, and spending time with her family, friends, and fur babies.
Our College of Education Advisor is Dr. Monica Harris!
Dr. Harris is a professor in the College of Education at GVSU. She has been both a general and special education teacher as well as an at-risk coordinator at the secondary level. Currently, she teaches Universal Design for Learning (UDL) courses and supervises graduate students working on their Master's Thesis or Projects. She is a member-at-large for MCEC Executive Board and has been a life-long member of CEC. She enjoys teaching, learning new technology things, traveling, and being with family and friends!
