Our President is Selena Brown! This is fourth year on the e-board and fourth year as a CEC member. Selena is a senior at Grand Valley studying Special Education pursing endorsements in Cognitive Impairments and Emotional Impairments. She is a student in the Fredrick Meijer Honors College, a fellow of the Hauenstein Cook Leadership Academy, and a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honors fraternity. Additionally, she serves as the President-Elect for the Michigan Council for Exceptional Children student board. With her degree, Selena hopes to serve as a teacher for adults with intellectual disabilities in a post high-school transitions program where she would facilitate learning of adaptive behaviors skills in order to transition individuals into independent adulthood. She is extremely passionate about the inclusion of individuals with disabilities and hopes to one day open a business that employs individuals with disabilities in order to close the gap of unemployment within this population. Selena is very passionate about cinnamon rolls and ice cream. In her free time, Selena loves to read, spend time with friends and family, do yoga, craft, and binge watch Netflix!
Hi! My name is Meredith Filter and I am the Vice President for CECS! This is my third year as a part of CEC and my second on E-Board. I love meeting other students who are passionate about education, learning from current educators, and expanding my mindset on education. I am a junior this year studying Special Education. I am also involved in Campus Ministry as the Serve Global Team Intern and I am a part of the Fredrick Meijer Honors College. In my spare time, I love cooking and baking, hanging out with my friends, or reading a book by the lake.
Claudia is a senior, majoring in Comp Sci & Arts for Teaching, Special Education, She would like to become an elementary resource room teacher. She has volunteered at Lakeside Elementary's resource room in East Grand Rapids and has tutored children in reading at Springview Elementary in Allendale. She is also a member of Campus Ministry and in her free time, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, hiking, biking, and reading.
Hi! My name is Courtney Johnson and I am the secretary for CEC! This is my second year in CEC and my second year on E-board! I am currently a fifth year and in first semester of teacher assisting. My major is Special Education with a minor in Spanish. In addition to being involved in CEC, I am also involved in Kappa Delta Pi International Honors Society in Education and recently became an alumna member of Gamma Phi Beta. In my free time I love to travel, hike, play with my 8 month old puppy, and spending time with friends and family.
Hello!! My name is Mason Money and I am the Membership Chair of CEC this year! This is my second year in CEC, but my first year on the E-board. This year I am a senior at GV and studying Mathematics and Elementary Education. I love to be outside and doing anything active!
My name is Holly Arguelles and this is my first year as the treasurer for the Council for Exceptional Children. I am currently a sophomore, but junior standing in hopes to graduate next year and continue onto achieving my masters in graduate school. I am working on pursuing a major in Communication Sciences and Disorders and minoring in Aging and Adult Life. My occupational goals are to work with children as a Speech-Language Pathologist in a school for a few years and eventually work in a hospital setting.
My name is Melissa Parzych, I am a junior at GVSU, and I am majoring in Elementary Education and English. This is my second year on CEC and I absolutely love it! This year I am on the CEC e-board as Pen Pal Chair and I am so excited for the year to start and to have us start writing to our friends at an Allendale elementary school and Grandville Transitions. I have a passion for helping others and I love seeing when a 'light bulb' comes on for a student. I have wanted to be a teacher since I was little and I am so excited that I am getting closer to actually becoming a teacher!
Hi! I am Emma Flannery and I am the Apparel & Fundraising Chair of the Grand Valley State University Council for Exceptional Children. I am a junior and a Mathematics and Elementary Education major. This is my second year in CEC and my first year on the e-board. My dream job is to be a first grade teacher because of my first grade teacher who inspired me. Having the ability to speak with so many current and future educators in our organization makes me feel well prepared for my future.

Hello! My name is Monica Harris and this is my 5th year the faculty advisor for Student CEC at GVSU. I am an associate professor in the College of Education (COE) at GVSU and teach courses in universal design for learning (UDL), inclusive practices, and transition practices as well as advise graduate students with their master’s projects/theses. My research interests are in multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS), positive behavior intervention and supports (PBIS), and vocabulary instruction.
